Barnyard Organics is a certified organic, family-run farm in Freetown, Prince Edward Island, led by Mark and Sally Bernard and recognized across Atlantic Canada for its commitment to soil health, organic integrity, and regenerative agriculture. What began as a grain farm has grown into a diversified operation that integrates organic crop production, livestock, on-farm processing, and regional food-system leadership.
The farm produces a wide range of organic grains, legumes, and oilseeds—including wheat, oats, barley, soybeans, and field peas—managed through thoughtful crop rotations designed to build soil structure, enhance biodiversity, and increase long-term carbon storage. Their approach prioritizes feeding the soil, not the crop, with practices such as multi-species cover cropping, reduced tillage where possible, and the strategic integration of grazing livestock.
A defining feature of the farm’s regenerative transition is the incorporation of cattle and managed grazing into crop and pasture systems. The herd, including their well-known Belted Galloways, plays a central role in distributing nutrients naturally, improving soil fertility, and supporting the microbial life that underpins resilient organic production. This integration of crops and livestock—combined with a low-input, closed-loop philosophy—positions Barnyard Organics at the forefront of climate-smart farming in the region.
The farm is also home to the East Coast Organic Feed Mill, which produces high-quality organic livestock feed for farmers across Atlantic Canada. Through the mill, Barnyard Organics offers custom feed mixes, bulk orders, and soybean roasting, helping other producers access reliable organic inputs while strengthening the region’s organic supply chain. Their retail arm, The Grainery, provides flours, rolled oats, and whole grains for home bakers, restaurants, and local food enthusiasts.
Mark and Sally are active leaders in agricultural education and advocacy, regularly sharing their expertise on soil health, regenerative methods, and sustainable farm business practices. Known for their community-minded approach, they continue to innovate while supporting the next generation of organic and regenerative farmers.
Barnyard Organics stands as a model of integrated, environmentally responsible farming—where healthy soils, thriving livestock, and vibrant rural communities are treated as mutually reinforcing goals.
