Nitrogen Fertilizer and Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The Government of Canada has set a national target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from fertilizer application by 30% below 2020 levels. This will require a change in the way that nitrogen fertilizer, in particular, is used on farms. Although organic farmers do not use synthetic nitrogen fertilizer, it’s important to understand the issues and look for opportunities to share experiences from organic practices like using legumes to supply nitrogen.
