Apprenticeships and mentoring

Nothing is as strong as having personal support [referring to a neighbour, a retired farmer, who has helped in many ways].

SOIL Apprenticeship Program. SOIL is a national program that links Canadian farmers with people wanting to work and learn about sustainable farm practices. Any farm who embraces sustainable farm practices can participate if they have the desire to help teach a new farmer. Room and board, plus a small stipend, is often provided to apprentices. In Atlantic Canada, ACORN works with SOIL to deliver the program and promote it to potential apprentices.

The New Brunswick Organic Farm Apprenticeship Program is a six-month on-farm training program for the next generation of organic farmers. Each month, the apprentices are invited to workshops which are held on various farms. Topics range from Organic Soil Management to Organic Pest Management to Organic Livestock Husbandry to Marketing of Organic Products. The program is open to all ages and levels of experience. The program is coordinated by the Falls Brook Centre.

WWOOF Canada. Willing Workers On Organic Farms and World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. A cultural exchange and helping exchange in which farmers provide room, board and instruction in exchange for work.
