March 3 Permaculture Fruit Farming: Establishing a Profitable Orchard. An overview of how to plan, establish and propagate a profitable fruit orchard is being presented by the Organic Agriculture Centre of Canada March 3 at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College. Green Barn Nursery will present information about new, exciting varieties of plants, plant hardiness, pest and disease resistance, planting, propagating, growing, picking, maintaining and selling. Speakers include Ken Taylor, who taught biochemistry for 35 years at John Abbot College while organic farming 70 acres of land on Ile Perrot, Quebec, and Steve Leroux, a lifelong entrepreneur and direct sales specialist. The two have teamed up to deliver invaluable information on the science, operations and sales aspect of small and medium sized fruit farming in Canada. “Our goal is to make a difference one farm at a time. By helping land owners establish sustainable and profitable farms we can have a positive impact on the environment as well as the health of Canadians. Canada imports almost all of its fruit. Much of the fruit imported can be grown here in Canada and retailers and wholesaler pay a fair price for that fruit. Farmers and land owners need to know.” The overview is being held in the Riverview Room, Jenkins Hall, NSAC, Truro, Nova Scotia from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm. The cost is $75.00 (includes lunch). Student price $20 (does not include lunch). Preregistration recommended. Contact: Margaret Savard, OACC at: 902-893-7256 or msavard@nsac.ca . For more information visit: www.oacc.info
